SWA: Home Chemical and Recycling Centers to Close

Home Chemical and Recycling Centers to Close

Please help minimize risk to your solid waste workers

At the close of business Monday, March 30, the SWA will close five Home Chemical and Recycling Centers. This is due to continuing developments around the county’s COVID-19 response, specifically Palm Beach County’s Amendment to Emergency Order 3 on March 29 implementing the Stay Home-Stay Safe: Safer at Home Policy and Florida’s Emergency Order 20-83.

Two HCRCs will remain open for crucial customer needs only. They are:

  • West Palm Beach Home Chemical and Recycling Center
6161 N. Jog Road in West Palm Beach
    Monday – Friday: 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.
    Saturday: 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Delray Beach – West
    Southwest County Transfer Station
13400 S. State Road 7 in Delray Beach
    Monday – Friday: 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.
    Saturday: 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

As always, commercial quantities of hazardous waste require special disposal. Call 561-687-1100 for details on your business becoming registered as a small quantity generator.

Garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulk waste collection are operating as scheduled. However, now is not the time to make unnecessary trips to any of the SWA’s disposal facilities with materials that can be collected as part of regular curbside collection. These unnecessary trips place SWA employees at risk.

Whether you are sick, caring for a sick family member or healthy, please securely tie all of your garbage in plastic garbage bags. This additional precautionary measure includes securing all personal hygiene products, used tissues, paper towel, sanitary wipes, face masks, gloves, and similar items in plastic garbage bags. Garbage bags should be tied securely for disposal.

If taking this time at home to clean up or clean out, use curbside bulk collection for disposal. In unincorporated Palm Beach County, bulk item pick up is provided once a week and limited to 3 items per collection day. If in a city, contact them for bulk item collection.

The county’s virus response has impacted SWA operations in the following ways:

  • Closing of five Home Chemical and Recycling Centers.
  • Closing of the Customer Convenience Drop-off Center at the North County Landfill. Residents and small haulers with demolition/renovation; trash/yard wastes; or other smaller waste loads are being diverted directly to the landfill.
  • Closing of the SWA Greenway Trail per County Emergency Order 3.

The Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County has developed a COVID-19 website where impacts to solid waste services and programs are outlined.

Cultural Council for Palm Beach County

Palm Beach County Artist Relief Fund

Palm Beach County is home to an extraordinary arts and cultural community composed of top-notch organizations and exceptional creative professionals (artists). As the COVID-19 (coronavirus) health crisis sweeps the nation, the financial impact on this community is profound. The Cultural Council for Palm Beach County is working to provide information, resources and support for recovery efforts.

Many of these creative professionals make their income partially or fully through gigs and freelance work. Your donation will help the Council create the Palm Beach County Artist Relief Fund, which will award grants of $250-$500 to individual artists who live in Palm Beach County and whose creative practices and incomes are being adversely impacted by COVID-19.

With your donation, you’ll be helping creative professionals that are recouping financial losses that include, but are not limited to:
• Cancelled performances in all performing arts disciplines
• Cancelled readings, panels, and speaking opportunities
• Reimbursement for travel expenses related to creative work that include, but are not limited to: attending conferences and conventions that have been cancelled; artist residencies; touring
• Lost income for teaching artists who are not able to teach during this time because of cancelled classes and school closures, and artists in the service industry who have lost supplemental income used to support their creative practices.

This fund will be restricted to support individual professional artists only. The Council will welcome applications (opening April 6, 2020) from all artists living in Palm Beach County but will prioritize lower-income artists.

Creative professionals and their work are the backbone of an industry that provides everyone with so much joy, wellbeing and inspiration during the best and worst of times. Now is the time to support them when they need it most.

We believe support for creative professionals is essential to a stronger and more vibrant community. If you agree and are able to help, donate today. 100% of funds raised for this program (less processing fees, if any) will be used to support creative professionals who have lost gigs or shows. The overall starting goal for this fund is a modest $10,000, but we hope to exceed it!

**If you prefer to donate online, please visit palmbeachculture.com/donate and include the gift designation “Artist Relief Fund” with your donation

The Cultural Council has also compiled a list of Virtual Cultural Experiences across Palm Beach County – Click Here to Find Them!
