You Made Me Love You : The Story of Al Jolson, America’s First Musical “Superstar”

Anyone who’s listened to his recordings or seen his films will not be surprised to learn that as a Broadway star, Al Jolson was billed simply as “THE WORLD’S GREATEST ENTERTAINER!” When he recorded the first song ever heard in a sound film (The Jazz Singer), he had already been a star in Vaudeville and on Broadway for three decades. Before the age of “re-enforced sound,” Jolson was renowned for being able to galvanize audiences in The Winter Garden Theatre without a microphone. His film, “The Singing Fool”, was the highest-grossing film of its time! (It’s record was finally broken in 1939 by Gone With The Wind.) And as a singer, he introduced more popular songs than any other singer of his generation, including George Gershwin’s “Swanee”“April Showers”“Toot Toot Tootsie”“California, Here I Come”“The Anniversary Waltz”“Rock-a-bye Your Baby (With a Dixie Melody)”, and “Waiting for the Robert E. Lee”.
